Boulevard Lounge in Midland, Michigan, has been in the Dexter family since the 1950s

Dear Murray, 63, and Scott Dexter are the owners of Boulevard Lounge, located on South Saginaw Road near Circle in Midland. The Boulevard, or “Bully,” serves bar food, burgers, wings, daily specials, and is also open for breakfast, serving omelets. They offer 100 different beer choices including four on tap. On Wednesdays, they sell $2 drafts.

For entertainment, there is trivia on Tuesday nights and live music on Saturdays. The boulevard opens at 7 am and closes at 10 pm Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 pm Thursday through Saturday. They have 36 employees. Cherie is from Sanford while Scott was born and raised in Midland.

How long have you owned your business?? Scott took over the business from his father, Clyde, in 1995. His father and Mr. (Fred) Ginsiver bought it in the mid-1950s from Ed Langley. His father played for Dow AC’s (softball team). His father bought his partner in 1959.

What inspired Scott to own the business? Scott’s father was ill. Her father asked her if she wanted to take him. Scott was driving beer and Coca-Cola trucks before that.

What makes Midland a great place to own a business? First of all, our loyal customers. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be here. Many come in on a daily basis or two to three times a week to meet up with friends. All the sports we have here in town, baseball, softball, golfers, football fans. We do a lot with the Midland High football team, Dow fans come in too. We have the volleyball team coming in before the games this week. Scott’s father was a Buckeyes (Ohio State) fan. We always do something with that when they play Michigan.

What are some ways your business is active in the local community? Oh my god, I get a phone call every day for some kind of donation. We donate to schools, golf outings, charities, Midland Explorers, and many others.

What are some of your interests and hobbies? We traveled all over the United States. We like to play golf. We love watching our grandchildren play sports, and just doing yard work, working outside.

What are some local businesses you work with that help make your business a success? We buy 200 pounds of ground chuck every other day from Jack’s. Stapleton Foods from Hemlock. Fabiano and O’Sullivan for beer, US Food, Lumetta Vegetables from Detroit. For liquor and wine, the state, NWS of Michigan, and Michigan Wine and Spirits. Also do a lot of shopping at Kroger, right across the street, they help us a lot. CPI for all our cleaning and paper products.

Final thoughts are shared? First of all, a big thank you to all my employees especially since the pandemic, a lot of loyal employees who have been here 10 or more years. Front of house day manager, Vanessa; my night manager, Carrie; and the kitchen manager, Liz; assistant managers, Matt, Brian, and Tori; and change leader, Hunter. I want to recognize them. I want to thank all our customers for their support. And, all our food suppliers. I had to call Stapleton over the weekend if we ran into something. They are good at sending things to us. I can call them anytime, they always answer. We strive very hard on our services and food we will from the customers. After the pandemic, we put the windows, the new roof, painted the building, changed the appearance. Couldn’t do it without our customer support.
