Brazil school shooting: At least 3 dead and 11 injured


A gunman opened fire on two schools in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo on Friday, killing at least three people and wounding 11 others, local officials said.

The attacks took place in Aracruz, a small town about 50 miles north of the state capital, Vitoria.

The alleged shooter – who was seen in security footage with a semi-automatic weapon, military clothing and a face covering – has been arrested by police. Authorities have not yet identified the suspect, but local media, including CNN affiliate CNN Brasil, have identified the man as 16 years old.

Espirito Santo Governor Renato Casagrande confirmed in a Twitter post on Friday that “security teams captured the attacker who cowardly attacked two schools in Aracruz. I mourn the irreparable losses. Three days of official mourning have been announced. We will continue to investigate the cause and will have new details soon.

The governor said the attacks took place at the Primo Batti School and the Praia de Coquerel Educational Center.

Speaking to the media, Public Safety Minister Marcio Celante said police believe the suspect acted alone based on security video, but admitted further investigation is needed to find out more details of the incident. .

Celante also disclosed something shown in the security video.

“The first criminal act was to gain access to the school by breaking the lock. He had access to the teachers’ room,” Celante said, “Later, he moved to another school, where he made more victims.”

Brazil’s newly elected president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, called the incident a “ridiculous tragedy”.

“It is with sadness that I was informed of the attacks on the Aracruz schools in Espirito Santo. My solidarity is with the families of the victims in this absurd tragedy,” Lola tweeted.

Brazilian Minister Victor Godoy also joined his government colleagues in expressing their condolences.
