China tops U.S. for first time in this ranking of world’s ‘best’ universities

China has overtaken the US in a major ranking of the world’s best universities.

According to US News & World Report, out of 2,000 schools from more than 90 countries, 338 Chinese universities made the list, compared to 280 American universities. This is the first time China has overtaken the US.

The results were reported in the media outlet’s “Best Global Universities Ranking” released on Tuesday. The US and China are followed by Japan (105 universities), UK (92) and India (81).

The media outlet launched its rankings in 2014 as more universities began to compete for students as well as faculty and research investment. The ranking is based on several parameters, including research reputation, publications, conferences and references. Student outcomes and individual programs are not included.

Although China has overtaken the US by 58 places, the majority of US universities appear in the top half of the rankings, including 8 of the top 10, the report said.

The report added four new subjects to its 43 classifications: artificial intelligence; education and educational research; Meteorology and Environmental Sciences; and water resources. “They’re a hot field right now and there’s a lot of interest at various levels,” Robert Morris, chief data strategist at US News, told MarketWatch in an email.

Artificial intelligence is one of the few areas that both the US and China see as strategic national priorities. The Biden administration signed the National AI Initiative Act of 2020 into law in 2021, which aims to advance U.S. leadership in the field.

Among the top 10 schools for AI, five were from mainland China, including Tsinghua University, which ranked No. 1. Carnegie Mellon University is the best US college for AI research, ranking 12th on the list. Fewer Chinese students have attended college in the U.S. since the coronavirus pandemic. From January to September 2022, 52,034 Chinese nationals received F-1 visas, down from 95,518 for the same period in 2019, according to data from the US State Department. F-1 visas are used by international students to obtain a degree or academic certificate in the United States.
