Ctg man strikes gold by farming fish, chicken, organises community

After the Alim exam – the equivalent of the High School Certificate (HSC) exam, Kaiser Alamgir decided to take a different path than most of his peers.

Instead of pursuing higher education or employment, he wanted to become an entrepreneur in poultry farming and aquaculture.

After receiving training in livestock, poultry and fish farming at the Youth Development Center in Chattogram town, he took a Tk 50,000 loan from his contractor father Ahmadur Rahman and built a 1,500 square feet shed on the roof of his house.

Kaiser, a resident of Hasondandi area of Chandanaish upazila Chattogram, started broiler chicken farming with 1,000 chicks in his rooftop shed in 1998 and has never had to look back since then.

The business continued to grow from poultry and fish farming, making him the best fish farmer in the district for 2018.

With broilers and layers of poultry and a variety of fish in his farm inventory, Kaiser’s local business is now worth around Tk2 crore and growing.

Kaiser’s chicken farm is situated on 1.20 acres of land next to Laltia Pahar in Chandanish upazila of Chattogram. It also has five fish projects on 20 acres in the same area.

He said 15 people are working in his farm “Shah Jabbaria Agro” with wages ranging from Tk10,000 to a maximum of Tk22,000.

With a sigh of satisfaction, Kaiser said, “I sell poultry and fish worth Tk1 crore every year. I have cultivated various fish in my enclosures including Pangash, Shing, Koi, Bata and carp fish.”

When asked about his success story, he said, “I got to this position with hard work, patience and concentration. But the journey was not smooth.”

“I suffered great losses due to various reasons at different times, but I did not give up. I had to be an entrepreneur – that was my perseverance,” he said.

“I have four brothers and one sister by myself. I dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur since I was a child and to run a family business. I wanted to involve my brothers in the family business and I did it. Each of my brothers they now have their own poultry, livestock and fish farming businesses,” Kaiser said.

While he kept them company, Kaiser somehow managed to continue his studies together. He graduated from Uttar Satkania Zafar Ahmad Chowdhury Degree College.

Kaiser said he feels happy that he has the ability to take care of the family and his business income. “Many of my friends went after work but could not become independent at all,” he said.

After the Alim exam, my family and friends wanted me to go to the city to pursue higher education but I didn’t, he said, adding that official work never really appealed to him.

“In the first year, I made a profit of around Tk 1 lakh in poultry farming. Two years later I started fish farming and the amount of profit increased year on year,” he said.

When asked about his future plans, Kaiser said he wants to expand his fish fence. “I want to increase the number of ponds by using the surrounding land. I have been trained to cultivate more fish in less space.”

Kaiser’s advice to young people – Don’t chase jobs, become an entrepreneur. “In addition to being independent, many people can work. It also plays a role in the country’s economy,” he said.

He also wants the government to reduce duties on chicken feed and imported fish.

“Even if the price of poultry and fish feed increases, farmers cannot sell fish and chicken at high prices. The concerned authorities should pay attention to this matter so that farmers do not incur losses,” the farmer said.

Chittagong district fisheries officer Farhana Lovely told The Business Standard that Kaiser has set an example for the unemployed to become self-reliant.

“Like Kaiser, the youth should come forward in breeding and breeding fish other than chasing jobs,” he added.

As a role model for many, new entrepreneurs often visit the Kaiser farm for advice. One of them was a young man named Didarul Alam who built a fish farm with Kaiser’s advice.

Didarul said, “Following the Kaiser brand, many youths in the locality have taken similar initiatives. Some 10-12 youths in the Kaiser village have also become successful entrepreneurs in the agriculture sector.”

Kaiser formed a cooperative society called “Alokito Jubo Samabay” (Society of Enlightened Youth) with 100 youth from his village. Collecting funds through this cooperative, they built the “Alokito Community Center”.

Deputy Commissioner Chattogram Md Elias Hosain awarded Kaiser Alamgir as the successful fish farmer in the district in 2018.
