Heavy rains begin soon. Friday, between about 6 a.m. and noon, likely ending as snow showers. A light coating on the grass can’t be ruled out, especially north and west of DC where the main story is crashing temperatures and strong winds. Most of us start the day in the 40s, but we’re in the 20s to 30s by lunchtime, and in the 20s with clear skies in the late afternoon or early evening. . Winds from the west, generally in the 30-40 mph range with a few gusts around 50 mph, should dry things out nicely. But any remaining wet spots are sure to freeze (what we call “flash freezes”) during the afternoon to evening. Confidence: Medium

Saturday’s winds, 20-30 mph out of the west, will keep wind chills in the single digits and teens throughout the day. Not quite as windy as the long Sunday, but still enough to keep the wind chill from hovering in the low 20s as the breeze passes through the teens. Confidence: Medium
High temperatures should return to the 30s to 40s Monday and Tuesday.

1/10 (→): As the Arctic front blasts through early Friday, the rain showers may turn to snow showers before ending. We don’t usually see deposits under these conditions, but can’t rule out a light coating on the grass, especially north and west of DC.
