The recently released DC film Black Adam saw the much-anticipated return of Henry Cavill as Superman, a move that actor Dwayne Johnson says Warner Bros. Discovery initially did not want to happen.

In a new video celebrating Black Adam being the first movie on iTunes, Johnson praises Cavill’s return, noting that if they wanted to establish Black Adam as one of the most powerful people in DC, they had to bring back “the most powerful, unstoppable force in the entire universe,” which of course is Superman.

However, Johnson then seems to take some shots at the up-and-coming DC Films, noting that they “inexplicably and inexplicably” didn’t want Cavill back. Although Johnson didn’t say much about it, he noted that they wouldn’t take no for an answer, and continued to fight for Cavill’s return.

“And you guys know who I’m talking about. Yes, it’s Superman, and it’s Henry Cavill,” Johnson said. “And at the end of the day, the studio wasn’t bringing Henry Cavill back, inexplicably and randomly. But we weren’t going to say no. Myself, my Seven Bills assistant and chairman, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, our Seven Bills leader. This has been years in the making in regards to bringing back Henry Cavill. And years of intelligent discussion, and we weren’t taking no for an answer. “

Johnson went on to say that it doesn’t make sense from a strategic and business standpoint to continue building the DC Universe and not have Superman involved in it. The star then went on to say that Cavill is the “Superman of our generation,” and the “greatest Superman,” in his opinion.

“And again, the other thing to think about is, for us, there was no way, no possible, logical way that you could try to build the DC universe without a super-powered super-hero and the biggest superhero of all time sitting on the top side,” Johnson said. “It’s impossible to do.” You can Venn diagram, business-wise, this whole thing 90 different times. But it all comes back to, ‘Where’s Superman?’ You must have a Superman combination.

“That’s why we fought so hard to bring back Superman, Henry Cavill. And there was no other Superman, by the way, to bring back. Henry Cavill is the Superman of our generation and, in my opinion, the greatest Superman. And I mean that with respect to the other actors, especially Christopher Reeve. But Superman is the greatest of all time. “
