England vs. United States – Football Match Report – November 25, 2022

The United States dominated the attack but could not find a way past England as they were held to a goalless draw in their second match at the 2022 World Cup on Friday.

The USA had the best in a match that lacked clear chances. The threat came closest when Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar with a ferocious shot midway through the first half, but neither side could break the deadlock.

The result left coach Greg Berhalter’s team in third place in Group B, with two points from two matches, and they need to win their last group match against Iran on Tuesday to advance to the knockout stages. Meanwhile, England will qualify as long as they avoid a three-goal defeat in their match against Wales.

England striker Harry Kane was a doubt after suffering an ankle injury in the convincing win over Iran on Monday, but he was declared fit days before kick-off, allowing manager Gareth Southgate to name an unchanged squad. Meanwhile, Berhalter made just one change from the USMNT’s opening draw with Wales – bringing in striker Haji Wright in Josh Sargent’s place.

Kane never once again donned the OneLove captain’s armband after FIFA threatened not to, but instead the English Football Association lit up Wembley Stadium’s famous arch in rainbow colours.

How can the United States advance in the 2022 World Cup?

The USA enjoyed better chances in a quiet first half. Kane looked dangerous early on, getting into the six-yard area in time to shoot and force opposing defender Walker Zimmerman into the game’s first offensive opportunity.

But Berhalter’s side sprang into action soon after and offered a couple of enticing opportunities. First, midfielder Weston McKinney tipped home an attempt for the first time from inside the 18-yard box, followed minutes later by Pulisic taking on England defender Luke Shaw before hitting a powerful shot, only to be blocked by the crossbar.

The United States seemed the most likely to break the deadlock, winning a number of corners amid regular attacking pressure, while England’s attack remained frustrated by the well-organized and resolute American defence.

Southgate brought on Jack Grealish for Judd Bellingham in the 68th minute to spark the England attack, but little changed as the United States continued to shut out their English counterparts, as they played their first 0-0 draw in 11 World Cup matches.
