Man does not simply represent Mordor. Have you heard a word about Hot Sauron in the Rings of Power and how everyone sends him and … well … you’ll see. While other fandoms fight over whether it’s worth loving a villain, TROP fans love one of the biggest baddies in the books. The robbers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power forward, definitely in Season 1 and maybe in other seasons to come.
Sauron’s heat is canon.
While the series summarized the list of books and events in the history of Middle-Earth as presented in the books, stories, and appendices of JRR Tolkien, one thing we do know: Sauron was a hot guy. This is something that even die-hard Tolkien fans cannot deny. In Tolkien’s middle-earth biblical text The SilmarillionAt the beginning of the chapter entitled “Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age,” Tolkien says:
When Thangorodrim was broken and Morigoti was overthrown, Sauron again donned his fair color and bowed down to Eönwë, herald of Manwë, and renounced all his evil deeds. And some believe that this was not done falsely at first, but that Sauron repented in truth, if only out of fear.
(I know the chapter is called the Third Age, but I believe that chapter describes the events of the Second Age leading up to it.) I The Silmarillion and specify that “Annatar,” the name used by Sauron when he is “Lord of Gifts” and the rings with the title of power are produced, take the “right path.” The good looks are temporary, however. When Numenor finally fell and Sauron created the One Ring, The Silmarillion notes:
In the middle of the Land of Mordor [Sauron] form the Ruling Ring. There now he growled in the darkness, until he made a new shape for himself; and it was too bad, for her beauty was gone forever when she was cast into the abyss of Númenor’s drowning.
The transition from page to screen was still amazing.
So we knew that Sauron would be easy on the eyes Rings of Power and we knew he was going to be seductive in some way. That’s how he gained the trust of ancestors, ancestors, and men before stabbing them all in the proverbial back with the One Ring. That said, I don’t know about you, but I thought Annatar—or whatever you call yourself—was going to be one of Legolas’ girls, hot in an Elven way. I didn’t expect him to be as hot as the rugged, unwashed, Aragorn. RIP me, I guess.
Enter Halbrand, played by Australian actor Charlie Vickers, who we now know is (sing it with me) Sauron all along. Wow, boy. He is beautiful again it’s sad again black again taking a deep breath. Galadriel meets him on a raft in the sea. He is on a mission to find and defeat Sauron after he killed his brother working for Morgoth, the Big Bad before him, and ended up not only befriending him but paving the way for him to return. Oops!
Soon after they meet, Galadriel does some expensive thinking and creates a backstory for herself that appeals to both her and the fans: a reluctant warrior and heir to the Southeast—an exiled king, like Aragorn, right? It’s wrong! Halbrand will technically rule over the Southlands, but only because that area of Middle-Earth is destined to become Mordor. Still, Gal’s hero’s journey and the unsuspecting audience she was sold on made us look at Halbrand and her actions in a different light.
Sauron has been tricking Galadriel, but she is also at a crossroads.
One of Tolkien’s books that may have inspired Vickers to cast him says “when Morgoth is finally defeated by the Valar. [Sauron] he left his loyalty; but only with fear; he did not reveal himself to the Valar or claim pardon, and remained in Middle-Earth. When he discovered how much his knowledge was admired by all other rational beings and how easily he was influenced, he became proud.”
Technically, Rings of Power cannot adapt directly The Silmarillion for legal reasons, so these books are really important. Vickers also referenced using Tolkien’s characters as inspiration in an SDCC interview with ScreenJunkies ahead of the Big Sauron Reveal.
That passage refers to Sauron making an attempt at a normal life, and perhaps even feeling some private regrets before finally entering into not only Morgoth’s servant, but also his second coming. That makes him complicated. And the characters are very, very complex, a lot it’s hot—especially when they’re being tempted by the Dark Side.
Sinking onto a hot villain isn’t exactly a new concept.
Anakin Skywalker, Kylo Ren, Loki, Killmonger, Draco, Harley Quinn, the Darkling, the Goblin King, Regina Mills … need I go on? We know they are bad, but they really aren’t. We do not owe our loyalty to fictional heroes. They cannot see us. In fact, we can cheer for the hero while being attracted to the villain. Fans consist of crowds!
As long as you don’t abuse others by not sharing your opinions or headcanons, or start using fictional characters to justify your actions or the actions of IRL bullies, it’s cool. Stories, especially in fiction and science, help us face our fears, worries, and dreams in a safe place.
He even survived the shower—don’t know if it sounds wrong, but fans weren’t happy when greaseball Aragon was washed up and blown up The return of the Lord. Imagine Steve Rogers shaving The end of the gamebut the worst made us go against basic hygiene.
We know he is a villain even though he may not see it.
If you weren’t familiar with Hot Sauron as a concept before Rings of Powerthis might make you watch Peter Jackson movies one day.
What pushed Halbrand aka Sauron’s thirst over the edge, however, was sending him through Galadriel, played in Rings of Power by Morfydd Clark. They both flirt, in that deep yet innocent way we expect from it The Lord of the Rings, and asked her to be his Queen at last. There was an arm touch. There were stares. Is it wrong? Definitely. There are a lot of red flags. He is the Dark Lord and the future one. He becomes the epitome of evil. Galadriel is also married, although in Season 1 she is believed to be a widow. I ask you this: And????
We know for a fact that this ship is not the end of the game.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun, appreciate the time they had, or maybe jump into an AU for now. Galadriel would be happy too. Strong, confident, passionate, intelligent female characters like Galadriel in the Rings of Power they are as boring as Entmoots if they are not allowed to make mistakes. Bring ‘manifestos, fic, Tumblr posts, gifsets, and more facams set to Taylor Swift songs.
Let me be very clear: I want someone to look at me like this. I agree not I want to be deceived by the Dark Lord and I am controlled by the One Ring that he did behind me and he does not even allow me to wear our wedding photos. I really don’t know search seeing Galadriel to become the Dark Elf Queen on Sauron’s side, but I want to see her think about it and fight her feelings and/or Halbrand. If Celeborn comes back, I want him to be part of a love triangle. There is a difference!
Are you too tired of your inevitable burning eyeball to attract Sauron? That is your right. To be honest, there are many hotties Rings of Power. But Hot Sauron is no match for Hot Elrond, Gilgadaddy, or ElenDILF as far as I’m concerned. I love them all. I merrier more! I will be here with other black and twisted devotees.
