Jeremy Renner was crushed by snowplow as he tried to save nephew from injury, sheriff’s report says

Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to stop his snow plow from skidding and hitting his elderly nephew when he was pulled under a car and crushed on New Year’s Day, according to a Nevada sheriff’s office incident report.

The parking brakes were not engaged and could have stopped the snowmobile, which is traveling on the road, as it began to slide sideways after the 52-year-old “Avengers” star was using it to get his nephew’s truck out of the snow, according to a revised Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report, filed Friday.

“Pistenbully’s snowmaker began to slide causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brakes,” reads the summary of the report, which CNN obtained Tuesday through a public request.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical equipment, it is believed based on our mechanical analysis that the parking brake would have prevented the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner tried to stop or divert the Pistenbully from injuring (his nephew), he was pulled under the car by the tracks and ran.”

The brake light inside the winter cab was not working, and “mechanical issues may have contributed to the crash,” the report states.

The nephew was able to help Renner until help arrived, the report said. Renner was airlifted to the hospital, where he stayed for more than two weeks, undergoing two surgeries and being treated in the intensive care unit.

Impairment was not believed to have caused the incident, the report also concludes. CNN has reached out to Renner’s representatives for comment.

The incident began on New Year’s Day, when Renner pulled his nephew’s truck out of the actor’s driveway after it became stuck in the snow, he told investigators on Jan. 5 while hospitalized, according to the incident report.

After pulling the truck off the road, the snow started “sliding sideways,” then “started rolling down the hill,” Renner said. At that point, Renner jumped off the ice, he told investigators.

“As soon as he left Pistenbully, he realized it was headed for (his nephew),” the report reads. “He was afraid that Pistenbully would hit (his grandson), so he decided to try to stop or distract Pistenbully.”

To get into the snowmobile, Renner had to climb onto his tracks and was “pulled under the left track,” the report says.

Renner was “completely crushed under the snowcat (car)” and had “extremely difficult” breathing, “with the right side of his chest … he collapsed — his upper torso was crushed,” a 911 call obtained by CNN said.

“Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” the report says. “He lay on the ground watching his breathing (his nephew and others) helping him until the doctors arrived at the scene.”

Renner, who plays superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel movie and TV series “Universe,” broke more than 30 bones in the incident, he said.

He posted a photo on Instagram last week with the caption: “Morning of work, all settings changed this new year …. It was born from a tragedy for my whole family, and an immediate focus on connecting love that can do ❤️ I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughts for my family and me. … A big thank you to all of you. These 30 more broken bones mend, grow stronger, as love and bond with family and friends goes down. Love and blessings to you all.”
