In his explosive new memoir, “Spear,” Prince Harry has revealed new details about the infamous fight over the bridesmaid’s dresses for Meghan Markle’s 2018 Sussex wedding to Kate Middleton.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, wrote that the Princess of Wales texted his wife the week of their wedding about a “problem” with daughter Princess Charlotte’s frock for the occasion.
The “French haute couture dress” was “sewn exclusively by hand. [the bridesmaids’] measurements” so it made sense they’d need some tweaks, Harry wrote of the pint-sized design, which was customized by then-Givenchy creative director Claire Waight Keller, who attended Markle’s wedding. The dress was also made.
The Duchess of Sussex, 41, responded to Middleton by asking her to bring Charlotte, now 7, to the palace, where a tailor was waiting to make alterations for all six brides. According to Harry, this was “not enough” for the princess, who set a time for the two to talk.
Charlotte’s dress was “too big, long and baggy,” Middleton reportedly told Markle, adding that the youngster “cried when she tried it on.”
When Markle reiterated that the Middletons should bring Charlotte to a tailor on standby for alterations, Harry wrote, the princess told him that all of the bridesmaids’ dresses needed to be completely redone — until the wedding. Four days left.
According to Duke, Middleton also said that her own wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, agreed with her assessment.
While the Princess of Wales eventually agreed to meet Charlotte with the tailor, Harry wrote, he later found Markle crying “on the floor” after the altercation. The next day, she continued, Middleton apologized and brought flowers and a card.
Inside Harry’s new memory
The gist of Harry’s ordeal expands on what Markle shared during the Sussexes’ bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. While it was widely reported that Markle made Middleton cry at their wedding, she revealed at the time, “The opposite happened.”
“I don’t think it’s appropriate for him to go into details because he apologized, and I have,” the Duchess of Sussex told Winfrey.
Clearly, her husband isn’t afraid to put it all on the line.
