Matt Lauer and girlfriend Shamin Abas are still going strong.
The couple stepped out together for a night out in New York City over the weekend. The first one Today The anchor, 65, was dressed casually in jeans, a gray hoodie, a black jacket and beanies while the PR executive, 53, wore a midi skirt, a tailored top, a jacket and heels.
“Matt and Shamin are happy and serious about each other,” a source tells PEOPLE of the couple. “They had a pretty solid foundation as friends and in business when they started dating, and the romance grew over the years.”
“They are happy and both busy in their lives, together,” the source adds. “They have a lot of common interests.”
Another book tells the story of these two people who enjoy living a low-key life together.
“They try to hide but they are happy together and not enjoying the high life,” says the book. “They’re off the radar and low-key. They’re enjoying their lives.”

The couple’s exit comes after an insider told PEOPLE in November that the television personality continued to struggle five years after being fired from the office. Today show.
The source shared that Lauer had “kind of let go of several friendships over the past year,” especially following the release of his former assistant Katie Couric’s memoir, Going There.
“She was really upset about Katie Couric’s book,” said the source. “His trust level just dropped with a lot of people he considered friends and a lot of that was because of Katie’s book, and because talking to old people hurts.”

In 2021, a source shared with PEOPLE that Abas was “very happy” in his relationship with Lauer. The two met through work 20 years ago and have remained friends. Following Lauer’s divorce from ex-wife Annette Roque in 2019, he and Abas began dating.
Lauer and Abbas both live in New York and spend time together between his business trips, according to the source, who added: “He is a dedicated businessman who loves to work. He is independent and has made a good life for himself.”
The source added that Abas supports Lauer “in every way” and that he will not interfere with his business.

Lauer was fired by NBC in November 2017 after a former network employee, later identified as Brooke Nevils, alleged that he sexually assaulted her. Several other women have come forward with similar accusations recently.

Nevils went public with Ronan Farrow for his 2019 book Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and Conspiracies to Protect Monsters. For Farrow, Nevils accused Lauer of sexually assaulting her in her hotel room at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where she was working for NBC’s Meredith Vieira. Lauer insisted that all of his encounters were consensual.
