VAR technology has been introduced for the 2019-20 Premier League season

The Premier League’s Video Assistant Referees have made six incorrect tackles this season – and have also missed six more incidents in which they should have been involved.

An independent five-person panel was introduced this season to conduct a weekly Key Match Incident (KMI) review of all first-class matches.

BBC Sport understands that the panel has gone through hundreds of incidents and has identified 48 situations in which the VAR needed to be involved, with 42 making correct decisions.

However, it found that six incidents were missed entirely and on six other occasions VAR overturned field decisions that were initially correct.

It is not known what the individual decisions will be, but the Premier League’s newly appointed head of refereeing, Howard Webb, is determined to improve the standards.

Given his time in Major League Soccer (MLS), where VAR is used, since 2017, it’s no surprise that Webb, who refereed the 2010 World Cup final, is an advocate of the system.

Don’t expect a response until March and realize the request may be denied because there has been no change in Ifab’s belief, backed by at least one major European league, that temporary substitutions can cause more problems by rushing into a concussion assessment.

IFAP remains of the view that any player suspected of having a concussion should be replaced entirely.
