Rayo Vallecano taught Real Madrid a lesson in sharpness and discipline
On a night when many expected Real Madrid to get the three points it had to grab, It was starkly clear from the first ball kick that such a task would be too complicated to complete.
Rayo Vallecano was playing at home around their neighbors throughout the match. Often attacking the left side – the responsibility of Dani Carvajal – Issei Balazone and Sergio Camilo were in control all night, with a mixture of great work ethic and refined play in tight spaces. However, it is also worth noting Fran Garcia and Santi Comissana. In fact, it was these two people who scored the first goal that night after some complicated play on the left. Comesaña met Garcia’s cross perfectly in a penalty kick and with a side end, he directed the ball into the lower right corner of Courtois’ goal.
From there, Los ‘Franjirrojos’ continued to increase the pressure, and in fact seemed likely to enhance his progress, but contrary to the course of play Real Madrid equalized by Luka Modric, who converted a penalty after a controversial foul by Marco Asensio. Soon, the hosts found themselves at the back after Eder Militao’s superb header from a corner kicked Stoll Dimitrievsky past Rayo.
That moment seemed to push Ryo to even higher levels of intensity. Just minutes later, it was Alvaro Garcia who equalized the score with a resounding shot from the left side of Madrid’s goal. Although Courtois managed to get the ball, the force of the shot was too great and so he could only turn it into the roof of the net. In the end, with just over 20 minutes left and without their coach – Andoni Iraola received a red card on the bench – Rayo set up a disciplined defensive rotation to close out the match. Moreover, they were then rewarded when Dani Carvajal touched the ball in the area when he faced Issei Balazon. Oscar Trejo will be the man charged with the resulting penalty, oddly enough, he actually had to take it twice after referee punished Courtois for moving too early.
For their part, Real Madrid weren’t necessarily weak in the game, rather inundated somewhat by wave after wave of Rayo’s pressure. One has to wonder if Rayo missed the rest of the league with his surprise win. They went into the match saying they had no reason to fear Real Madrid and it was definitely a case of “So it was said, so it happened” that night. With that, we wish you goodbye and hope you enjoy our live text coverage of the Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid match which ended 3-2 in favor of Rayo.
