UK Wildcats News: Bryce Hopkins Edition

Good morning BBN!

It was a crazy night across the college basketball scene last night with a major upset in the SEC as the Florida Gators took out the Tennessee Volunteers with ease. It also featured a major Big East matchup, which included former Kentucky Wildcat, Bryce Hopkins.

Hopkins had a breakout season after this previous season’s transfer to Providence, as Ed Cooley seemed to tap into the potential many knew during his time at Lexington.

He recently sat down with The Athletic’s Brian Hamilton and broke down a bit about his time on the Kentucky program and what we’re seeing from him in Providence this season.

“It doesn’t sound like much, but it means a lot, because you don’t have to look over your shoulder when you make a mistake,” Hopkins told Hamilton. “I feel like last year when I got out there, I was under a microscope. (Calipari) just wanted me to do certain things, and it was like I was playing like a robot. Now when I’m on the field it’s like Coach Cooley lets me do whatever I want, but under his system. I just can’t thank him enough for that.”

Last season in the UK was an interesting one for Hopkins. In the preseason, he was the talk of camp, before a back injury seemingly pushed him into a further rotation. With limited minutes, Hopkins decided to move to another location, and that’s exactly what happened with the brothers.

This season, he’s averaged 16.4 points on 48.6% shooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from three. He also adds 9.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

It was great to see Hopkins rip it off in blue and white, but it’s also great to see him thrive in the Monks system.
